Tossed Salad

I really wish that I could take credit for this yarn, but it was spun by my good friend Liz Mitchell on a drop spindle. She felted all the veggies and made fabric lettuce leaves. The tomatoes are red pompoms with green felted tops. She's got another one I really want to photgraph- a black and white 1920's art deco inspired yarn that I'm simply in love with. Stay tuned!

Textile ATC's

Artist Trading Cards

Finally broke down and bought a cheap ass sewing machine. As you can see, I'm having way too much fun making ATC's. I love my new toy! Oh the possibilities...

Art Yarn Spinner's Magic Yarn Ball Swap

Ok- I just had to steal the magic yarn ball swap idea and give it a new twist!

This swap is for spinners who's primary passion is spinning funky, unusual, wild and over the edge handspun art yarns.

As you all may or may not know, the idea is to wind up trinkets, treats and other cool stuff into a yarn ball and send it to your swap partner. For this swap we will be using our own unique handspun yarns. Try to include items that could potentially be spun into yarn along with sweets, cool stickers, charms, badges, buttons and other crafty little items. Use and stretch your imagination!

Sign-up deadline is November 1st and the swap dealine is November 30th. For more details or to join this swap:

Arrrrrgh!

This yarn was created for a pirate swap I'm participating in. One item in the swap has to be handmade. I'm going to knit this into a skinny scarf (there isn't much yardage) and embellish it with some booty in the fringe. I've got some old looking coins and plastic kitchey skulls and funky beads and stuff. It has me inspired- so keep yer eye open for my line of punk yarns coming to a website near you!

Weeekend in a Whirl

Here's a little peek at what I've been up to this weekend- spinning up that last skein on the right and setting the twist. Wait till you see the pirate yarn!

Siren

Mohair & wool blend spun with novelty eyelash snippets. Plied with mini-sequins on purple thread. YUM!

Stormy Seas

Yeah, I know, its been awhile since I've posted yarn picks. This yarn sat for a week on my wheel before I finally got around to finishing it. Its a gorgeous blend of mohair, angora, silk and wool spun with novelty yarn snippets plied with dark blue mohair locks and pompom thread. I'm having trouble getting in to a routine since I got back from my trip- getting up in the early a.m. for school is a killer. I am NOT a morning person. Thought I was done with that crap- it never dawned on me when I had kids that I'd have to do it all over again. SUCK!!!

I've just posted a themed fiber swap for art yarn spinners on swap-bot. If anyone is intrested in participating, follow the link:http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/810
The theme for this swap is Buggin' Out- with halloween just around the corner I'm thinking creepy crawly inspired fiber! New Listing on Etsy

This fiber pack contains an assortment of fibers that can be spun in to art yarns or used for other fiber art projects. To view the details of what all is in this assortment, please visit my etsy shop: www.yarnpunk.etsy.com

Seriously Folks...

Proof positive of my fiber addiction- no more living in denial. I found these bits of felt stashed in an unused tea cup in my kitchen cupboard. I had no idea they were even in there! Waste not want not- I'm going to work these little strays into some wearable art- I found more bits to match- I'm thinking a little beadwork on the felt bead, some additional felt and wire...

Fiber Pods!

What's a fiber pod? Recycled packaging and left over fibers from my spinning projects! Each pod contains 3 oz of blended wool and/or mohair, alpaca, silk, angora, mylar, angelina and other fibery goodness. I've listed 3 pods on my etsy site: www.yarnpunk.etsy.com
and will be adding more in the near future. I have plans for pods with snippets, sparklies, bobbles and bits for art yarn spinners, so stay tuned!

I'm Back!

Just got in lastnight after two weeks of basking in the Oregon sunshine. WOW! I almost forgot what the sun looked like. Thought I might burn to crisp or burst into flames while I was there, but instead have a nice bronzed glow! It's definately not a tan- I would have needed at least another two weeks of UV exposure to acheive that status.

Had an amazing time hanging out with my sister and an insane number of kids. Went to the Gilbert House- a children's museum in Salem which I highly recommend for an afternoon of inspiring play. I personally went nuts playing with the wacky experiments and interactive displays...

We also spent the day at a water park...

...and another day at the Portland Zoo peeping at all the animals.

I have to say, as much as I enjoyed the distractions, I'm glad to be back on the rock. Stepping off it for short while seriously makes you apreciate what you've got...

Now I'm jumping into unpacking, reorganizing, major paperwork, shipping out yarn orders, a new school year and thankfully, best of all: spinning new yarns! I treated myself to a happy return by preparing some gorgeous fibers (with all the trims) before I left on my trip- so now I have something to spin as soon as I can find time to jump behind the wheel. Methinks my fiber depraved fingers will find satisfaction sometime before the night is officially over.

Sunday, August 13, 2006

Finished this lastnight- it's still a little damp from setting the twist, but I'm shoving it in my suitcase and plan to mail it to miss crumpart from FreakPods! in Australia when I get down to Oregon. I ran out of time to get a skein from the shop in the post to her and didn't want to wait until I got back from my trip. I found a vintage clip-on earring with white, bone and pale baby blue bobbles in a round cluster this evening and clipped it into the skein. Wish I could have gotten a pic- looks delicious! Well, I'm off- first flight out of Kodiak in the morning... See ya!

News Flash!

Life is crazy busy right now- I'm getting ready to take a trip south to Oregon for 2 weeks to visit my sister who is moving to Wyoming. Looking forward to seeing her- it's been something like 2 years. Not sure if I'll be able to check my email or post to blogger while I'm gone, so here are some shop updates:

After this week, The Rookery will only be open for normal business hours on Friday, August 18th & Saturday, August 19th. All other days we will be closed. The same goes for the following week: the shop will only be open on Friday, August 25th & Saturday, August 26th. Not to worry though, Sarah will be teaching Tuesday evenings from 7-9 pm and said folks could stop in to pick up supplies and stuff during that time. Elizabeth Lehmer will be teaching Wedensday evenings starting at 6:30 and will also be available.

As for my shop www.yarnpunk.etsy.com : all orders placed between August 11th and August 25th will receive free shipping when I return.

I'll try and post again before I leave on Sunday- I'm hoping to finish up the yarn I'm working on before I leave and get pic's uploaded.

Serving Up Left-Overs

A blue alpaca single triple plied (chaos at its best) with lime green wool thread, sulky holoshimmer thread, purple vintage thread and snippets of yarny bits, sequins and lime green fluff. Just grabbed what was loose in my shelves at home and went for it. Ran out of spinning projects and needed a fix.
